So I’m at the Social Media in Recruitment event today. A session with the sales guy from Glassdoor has just finished, where the concept of employer transparency has been very much on the table. I flicked over to Facebook briefly in the break to check a few things… and saw this from a friend of mine:
I do believe social media will force employers to be more transparent, in time. However, the pace of change in social tech is very different to that of cultural change in organisations. Social media has no respect for hierarchy or control mechanisms, as has been demonstrated by so many global events over the past couple of years (think WikiLeaks, the Arab Spring).
For organisations to be truly transparent, employees at all levels need a level of trust and empowerment very rarely experienced. Instead of simply saying they’re a great place to work, it needs to be demonstrated by employees at all levels.
In the meantime… there will be casualties.
